  • NEWS RELEASE **SERVICE OFFICERS NOTE**:  A recent release from the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, MO indicates that copies of individual DD Form 214's are now available electronically or "on-line" by using a "new" web site.  While it is true that veterans and/or next-of-kin can make requests on-line for copies of  a DD Form 214 and/or other archival records a signature is still a requirement and at the end of the request the requester is required to print out a signature page to be signed and mailed or faxed to the NPRC.  The indication is that a copy will be mailed within 90 days and there is also a provision that allows for an explanation why a request should be expedited for faster handling.  Obviously, this "change" still does not allow an individual to request a copy of someone else's DD Form 214 as if it were now a public record.  Please note:   Records are accessioned into the National Archives, and become archival, 62 years after the service member's separation from the military. This is a rolling date; hence, the current year, 2012, minus 62 years is 1950. Records with a discharge date of 1950 or prior are archival and are open to the public. Records with a discharge date of 1950 or after are non-archival and are maintained under the Federal Records Center program. Non-archival records are subject to access restrictions - the restriction being that a signature is still required from the requester, even if the veteran him/herself is the requester. Tom Hanson, Veterans of Foreign Wars Department Service Officer

  • Sport Clips Haircuts Kicks-Off Annual Effort to Help Heroes Call Home  Release: November 1, 2011 • VFW National Military Services UpdateDownload the PDF For the fifth straight year, Sport Clips Haircuts is helping make phone calls home possible for deployed and hospitalized U.S. service members through its "Help a Hero" campaign, benefitting VFW's Operation UplinkTM. Through November 13, more than 800 Sport Clips locations nationwide will raise funds to continue to provide service members with free phone time once a month and on holidays throughout the year. "Some believe that the draw down in troops and access to the Internet means phone calls aren't as important to service members as they once were. However, since 2007, through our Help a Hero program, service members have been afforded more than 1.3 million calls to loved ones and spent 15 million minutes talking to them through company and client donations," said Sport Clips Founder and CEO Gordon Logan. "These calls are more than just ‘morale' calls. They're often a lifeline for those who are far from home - sometimes on their second or third deployment.  The calls were important to me when I was overseas in the Air Force, and are still important today."   Since setting their first goal at $30,000 in 2007, Sport Clips has more than doubled their goal for the program each year. This year, the franchise is aiming to raise $500,000 for Help a Hero by collecting donations at check-out. Also, Sport Clips will donate $1 from every hair care service on Veterans Day, Friday, November 11 - what the company calls "The Biggest Haircut Day of the Year."   "This is a remarkable expression of gratitude to all the brave men and women of our armed forces for their sacrifice and dedication made by hundreds of respective Sport Clips franchise owners, managers, enthusiastic employees and Sport Clips patrons. VFW is so fortunate to have forged such a strong friendship with Mr. Logan and his nationwide Sport Clips team. I hope that together we can continue to work and provide for our nation's defenders well into the future," said VFW National Commander Richard DeNoyer.   Sport Clips is now VFW's largest single-donation free call day sponsor, having donated more than $860,000 to Operation Uplink since 2007. Click here for a list of participating Sport Clips locations.  To learn more about Operation Uplink and other VFW National Military Services programs, click here.

  • Veterans Book Project Requests Support IFP Center of the Media Arts is a nonprofit organization that supports the production, promotion and sharing of film and photography in Minnesota. The photography exhibition program presents six two-person thematically related shows by Minnesota photographers yearly.  Artist Monica Haller has put together an exceptional project with Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, assisting them in the production of books of their photographs and writing.  The process is both revealing and cathartic. Quoting one author, “revisiting the pictures, cards and memories makes me realize I brought my family to war through me, and I’m responsible for that.” Twenty-seven have been produced to date.  The IFP Photography exhibition program is pleased to present the first reading room installation of Monica’s important project. But IFP is an exhibition space and working with the veterans we came up with a plan to produce a visual component to complement the reading room. A number of the veteran authors will make a wall installation of photographs and selected text from the books that will line the exhibition walls leading to the reading room. A exhibition concept document is included with this letter. They have budgeted $1,000 for technical assistance, production and installation costs. They are seeking support for this for this specific part of the exhibition. All funds will go directly to the veterans to produce this work.  The Veterans’ Book Project will be complemented with a second artist’s work. “Falling in Love as the Edge of the Universe,” is Teri Fullerton’s enigmatic title for her series of portraits of families that have a member - husband, wife, son, daughter, brother, sister - deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. Teri worked collaborative with her subjects to produce stunning images that reveal the separations in a highly conceptual and engaging way. We at IFP are very excited to be working with both of these exceptional artists to address in a highly innovative way the issues of those who are involved in fighting the wars and the families impacted. For more information, please see www.veteransbookproject.com   If you find this project worthy of your support checks should be mailed to IFP Center for Media Arts, 2446 University Ave. West, St. Paul, MN 55114, attn: Glenis with Veterans Book Project on memo line or cover letter. Thank you for considering this request.  Sincerely, Vance Gellert, Project curator
