Veterans of Foreign Wars

Cancer Research Center

Yesterday

During the 1953 State Convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the idea of the
Cancer Research Center was introduced to the members of the V.F.W. and it's Ladies
Auxiliary.  It was adopted and became the largest Community Service Project ever
attempted by a state Veterans of Foreign Wars.  The building was built at 406 Harvard
Street, Minneapolis, Minnesota, adjacent to the University Hospitals on the campus of
the University of Minnesota.  The building was dedicated September 20, 1959.

Since that time Posts and Auxiliaries have given funds for research in an effort to
eliminate Cancer from our society. The Cancer Research Center is the only statewide
facility specifically designated for Cancer Research.

The building and research activities provide a very special identity for the V.F.W. and
the Ladies Auxiliary in Minnesota and throughout the nation.

Today

A V.F.W. Cancer Trust or endowment fund has been set up to insure contributions to a
perpetual fund where the principle is not used, only the interest earned will be used for
Cancer Research.

Because of the high cost of research materials, equipment, and maintenance an
increase in size and number of contributions must be made to continue this outstanding
service to mankind.

Research

Originally the Veterans of Foreign Wars Cancer Research Center was built for Cancer
Research alone, and intensive research is still the main objective of the many doctors
and technologists working there.  The income for these scientists is derived from grants
or their own clinical practice.

Tomorrow

Guiding Cancer Research is a renowned group of doctors and their assistants whose
reputations are known nationally and internationally.  Their efforts in this field have led to
significant positive developments in the field of Cancer Research.  Their ultimate goal is
to remove the possible occasion of Cancer. They need encouragement and help.

Tomorrow we will abolish Cancer through the achievements of the specialists at the
Veterans of Foreign Wars Cancer Research Center, University of Minnesota, and the
aid of the V.F.W. Posts and Auxiliaries.
